ABOUT THE BOOK

“An ambitious, moving saga that connects the personal and the global, illustrating how a youthful friendship can have tender, lasting effects.” —Kirkus Reviews

Between 1966 and 1996, the French government authorized approximately 200 nuclear bombing tests in the Tuamotu Archipelago in the South Pacific. The resulting fallout has created outbreaks of cancer and other health problems for thousands of Ma’ohi families across multiple generations, the majority of whom were vehemently against the testing.

The Great Quiet tells the story of how this political reality inevitably becomes personal for two Ma’ohi families.

Manu and his teenage daughter, Ari, live alone after the death of his oldest son in a plane crash. When Ari gets diagnosed with myeloma, a secret he’s been keeping since that fateful day threatens her life too.
